Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Often referred to as “Postpartum” or Postpartum Depression, we now know that there is a spectrum of disorders related to childbirth called PMADs. Symptoms such as sadness, irritability, stress, anxiety, panic, obsessive/intrusive thinking, compulsive behaviors, nightmares can be due to biological/genetic, social and psychological stressors. We are told that having children is supposed to be one of the happiest experiences we have; unfortunately it doesn’t start that way for everyone.

The Baby Blues affect 80% of new parents and lasts for up to four weeks post-partum. If symptoms last longer you may be one of the 30% of new moms and 20% of new dads experiencing significant difficulty adjusting to parenthood, in which case therapy can help. If you have noticed significant changes either once pregnant or after delivery I can provide the help needed to reduce those symptoms, help you connect with your baby, and not feel afraid.
